Where the number comes from
Range figures are measured in open air with a clear line of sight. They are the best case, and they are marked with an asterisk for a reason.
Viper lists up to a quarter mile for many systems and up to a mile for the 5908V and 5808V.
What shortens range
Buildings, parking structures, hills, dense trees, metal fences and the vehicle itself all absorb or reflect the signal. So does radio noise from other devices. A remote held low or inside a pocket loses some range too.
The antenna position inside the car matters. We put it where the glass gives it a view out.
How to get more reach
Hold the remote up and away from your body. Move to a window if you are inside. Replace the battery in the remote when range falls off. Ask about a 2-way remote with a higher range rating.
If your use case is beyond a mile, a phone-based system such as SmartStart Pro works through the cellular network instead of radio.
A real-world example
A driver parks on the second level of a garage and leaves from an office on the eighth floor. Concrete and steel stand between the remote and the car, so a best-case figure means little. A 2-way remote can still work from a window, and it tells her when the command did not reach the car.
Quick answers
Why does range drop in the winter?
Cold batteries deliver less power. A fresh battery restores range.
Can range be improved after install?
Sometimes, by moving the antenna.
