A social-media trend made certain Hyundai and Kia models easy targets. Here is how layers of aftermarket protection raise the bar.

Starting in 2022, a social-media trend showed how certain Hyundai and Kia models, mostly keyed-ignition vehicles from roughly 2011 through 2021 that were built without an engine immobilizer, could be started by defeating the ignition with simple tools. Thefts of those vehicles rose across the country, and many owners have been left worried.
Both manufacturers have offered a software update and other measures. Check with your dealer, using your VIN, to see what applies to your vehicle. For many owners, adding independent layers on top makes sense, and that is where aftermarket security comes in.
A starter interrupt cuts the starter circuit so that even if the ignition is defeated the engine will not turn over. A hidden kill switch does the same thing in a different, manual way. A shock sensor and siren make the attempt noisy and short. A glass-break sensor adds coverage for the window entry that usually comes first.
GPS tracking does not stop a theft, but it changes the odds of getting the vehicle back.
A Viper security system with starter interrupt and sensors, a concealed starter kill switch, a steering-wheel lock recommendation and a SmartStart Pro GPS module are all on the menu. The right mix depends on how and where you park.

An alarm with a starter interrupt makes the attempt noisier and harder. No system is theft-proof.
A hidden kill switch is a simple second barrier that many thieves do not expect.
