The risk it solves
A manual car that is started while in gear will lurch forward or backward. A remote start for a manual vehicle must therefore know that the car is in neutral and cannot move.
The reservation routine
You park, shift to neutral and set the parking brake. With the engine still running you press the remote start button, or a combination of buttons, and then turn off the engine and remove the key. The system now knows the car was left in a safe state. If a door opens, the brake is released or the shifter moves, the reservation is canceled.
The exact routine depends on the system, and we walk through it with you.
Habits that help
Do the routine every time, even when you are in a hurry. Never leave a person or pet in a car with remote start active. Make sure everyone who drives the car knows the routine.
Things people get wrong
They assume the system will start the car anyway. It will not, and that is the point. They forget that a hood or door opening cancels the reservation. They hand the car to a valet without telling them about it. A short note in the glove box helps.
Quick answers
What if I forget the routine?
Remote start will not run. That is the intended behavior.
Can a manual be remote started in gear?
No. A properly installed system will not do that.
